Controversy at Science Museum: Balancing Sponsorship and Climate Change Awareness

Science Museum sponsor urges ‘armchair activists’ to step back

In recent months, a protest led by Greta Thunberg took place at the Science Museum. The protesters unfurled a banner with the message: “2024, more droughts and floods – fuelled by Science Museum oil and gas sponsors”. The Fossil Free Science Museum coalition, comprising of Extinction Rebellion and Scientists for Extinction Rebellion, raised concerns about the museum’s reputation being tarnished by its oil and gas sponsors.

The director and chief executive of the Science Museum Group, Sir Ian Blatchford, emphasized the importance of engaging audiences with the science of climate change. He described it as the defining challenge of our time. Despite criticism from some activists, Blatchford defended the museum’s decision to accept sponsorship from Adani Green Energy. He stated that the trustees believe in maintaining relationships with companies like Adani Green Energy to promote efforts in making the global economy less carbon intensive.

However, despite this controversy, Blatchford is committed to addressing climate change and educating the public on this critical issue. The museum’s new gallery was made possible by sponsorship from Adani Green Energy. This partnership has faced criticism from some activists who are concerned about its impact on the environment. Nevertheless, Blatchford remains steadfast in his belief that working with companies like Adani Green Energy is essential to promoting sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions.
