Exploring the Science of Weather Forecasting from the Open Ocean to the Jersey Shore: A Presentation by Michael Folmer

Upcoming Science Saturday: Weather Forecasting Discussion on March 30

Michael Folmer, the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center in College Park, Md, will be presenting at Science Saturday on March 30, 2024. The session will take place at 11 a.m. via Zoom and is organized by the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences. All Science Saturday events are free to attend.

Folmer’s presentation, “Forecasting the Weather From the Open Ocean to the Jersey Shore,” will discuss his work providing forecast products and Impact-Based Decision Support Services to various entities such as the U.S. Coast Guard, cruise lines, the cargo industry and everyday mariners who venture beyond 60 nautical miles offshore. He will also touch on the Jersey Shore Mesonet, a network of automated weather stations that includes LBIF weather station and plans to expand it further in future.

Although Folmer has a background in tropical meteorology, his main focuses now include satellite and mid-latitude weather. Prior to his current role at OPC, he served as satellite liaison for several satellite programs gaining expertise in this field.
