Miracle Save and Controversial VAR Decision: Everton Earns Crucial Draw Against Newcastle

Newcastle and Everton played to a 1-1 draw: An analysis from Yahoo Sports

Everton fought back to earn a crucial point against Newcastle, despite being outplayed for much of the match. Newcastle took an early lead in the 15th minute with a goal from Alexander Isak, but they were unable to consolidate it. Jordan Pickford, the ex-Sunderland goalkeeper, made some key saves to prevent Newcastle from extending their advantage.

However, VAR played a significant role in the game, disallowing a goal from Dan Burn for being offside and awarding Everton a late penalty after a foul by Paul Dummett on Ashley Young. Dominic Calvert-Lewin successfully converted the penalty, scoring his first goal since October and ending a 23-game goal drought.

Despite the draw, Everton’s winless streak in the Premier League extended to 13 games, setting a new club record. Manager Sean Dyche expressed hope that Calvert-Lewin’s goal would be the first of many as Everton desperately need more goals to climb out of the relegation battle.
