New WHO Director Takes a Strong Stand Against Polio in the Eastern Mediterranean Region

Health Ministers gather in crucial year to discuss polio eradication efforts – Global Polio Eradication Initiative

The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region recently held its 10th meeting of the Regional Subcommittee on Polio Eradication and Outbreaks, with health ministers from the region coming together virtually to discuss ways to combat polio and work towards its eradication.

The meeting was led by Dr. Hanan Balhky, the new WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, who expressed her determination to end polio during her tenure. Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Al-Kuwari, Minister of Public Health in Qatar and Subcommittee Co-chair, welcomed Dr. Balhky’s vision and expertise in propelling regional efforts.

Health ministers from across the region discussed strategies for combating polio and shared updates on outbreak responses and vaccination campaigns. Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Oweis, Minister of Health and Prevention of the United Arab Emirates, and Subcommittee Co-chair, also expressed their enthusiasm for Dr. Balhky’s leadership.
