Revolutionizing Photo Editing: WhatsApp Introduces New AI-Powered Tools

WhatsApp introduces a new feature allowing users to customize photo backgrounds and styles with generative AI

WhatsApp is introducing new photo editing features utilizing generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. The app’s standout feature is the ability to modify your background and replace it with another, as well as transform your style based on user descriptions. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has recently developed new tools based on generative AI, including the Meta AI chatbot and Expressive Media Universe (EMU), which creates images from text and allows users to create stickers directly from messaging applications to share in conversations.

In addition to these tools, Meta has announced two more image editing options based on generative AI: Restyle and Backdrop. Restyle applies visual styles to images based on a description, while Backdrop modifies the background according to user instructions. These tools are currently available on Instagram and will soon be added to WhatsApp’s Android version.

To access these new photo editing features on WhatsApp, users can click a new button in the photo sending interface that offers options such as cropping and rotating photos, adding stickers and text, or using the drawing tool. Alongside the icon for sending photo quality in HD, three more options have been incorporated: ‘Backdrop’ (Background), ‘Restyle’ (Change style), and ‘Expand’ (Expand), allowing users to resize images according to their needs. These photo editing features are still in development for Android; it is unclear if they will be available on iOS devices.
