Rising to the Cybersecurity Challenge: National Resource Guide for Healthcare Providers in the Wake of Change Healthcare Attack

HHS Unveils Health Plan Resource Guide to Support Hospitals and Providers Affected by Cyberattack

In the wake of the Change Healthcare cyberattack, the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have released a national resource guide of health plan contact information to assist hospitals and providers. The guide aims to provide support to healthcare providers who continue to face disruptions, as many are struggling to get answers from healthcare plans regarding payments and needed flexibilities during the unavailability of the Change Healthcare platform.

In a letter introducing the guide, HHS, ASPR, and CMS emphasize the challenges providers are experiencing as a result of the cyberattack and urge hospitals and health systems to review the voluntary cybersecurity performance goals that were released earlier in the year. They encourage providers to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect against cyber threats in the future.

For healthcare organizations seeking further assistance or clarification on payment issues related to the cyberattack, there is an AHA Change Healthcare cyberattack update webpage that offers valuable resources. These resources include announcements from CMS on accelerated and advance payments for hospitals and physicians affected by the cyberattack, frequently asked questions related to these payments, and an informational bulletin on actions states can take to provide relief to Medicaid providers impacted by the cyberattack.

Molly Smith, AHA group vice president of policy at mollysmith@aha.org is available for any additional questions or concerns that healthcare organizations may have. It is crucial for all healthcare organizations to stay informed, prepared, and vigilant in protecting patient care continuity during these challenging times.
