Russian Bombs Slam Ukrainian Cities: Zircon Missiles, Anti-Aircraft Defense Urgently Needed Amid Increasing Violence

Two massive bombings launched by Russia against Ukraine in a single day

On Monday, Russian forces launched two massive bombings against Ukrainian cities far from the frontline. The first attack targeted Kyiv, with several hypersonic ballistic missiles firing from the illegally annexed Crimean peninsula in 2014 by Moscow causing damage to three districts of the capital. In the afternoon, Russian bombers targeted Odessa and Kremenchuk as well as Kirovograd province with ballistic missiles from the Black Sea.

The speed at which the projectiles reached Kyiv without anti-aircraft alarms being able to warn of the danger caused panic among citizens. This was the third attack on Kyiv in five days and fourth large-scale attack against multiple Ukrainian provinces. Russian and Ukrainian military analysts identified Zircon missiles, one of Russia’s most advanced weapons systems, being used in these attacks. The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting two missiles in the capital, but at least five explosions were heard.

Ukraine’s deficit in anti-aircraft ammunition has been highlighted once again with bursts of anti-aircraft machine guns being heard in Kyiv as an attempt to shoot down the missiles. Ukrainian officials have called for increased anti-aircraft defenses to protect their cities and save lives. Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba emphasized the need for more Patriot missiles, which are American-made, to defend against such attacks. The escalation of bombings has caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in several Ukrainian cities, leaving many without vital services like electricity.

Russian military targets in Crimea have also come under attack, leading to retaliatory bombings by Moscow’s Kremlin forces. The recent increase in Russian bombings may be linked to Ukraine’s offensive against Russian oil refineries using bomb drones that has disrupted fuel production. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has intensified with both sides engaged in a deadly war that continues to impact innocent civilians across Europe and beyond.
