UNI Group Overcomes Financial Year 2023/24 Challenges with 474 Million Euro Sales

Unimarkt branches transitioning into franchises

The UNI Group, consisting of Unimarkt Handelsgesellschaft, UNIWholesale, and UNILogistik, faced challenges during the financial year 2023/24. Despite these difficulties, the group achieved total sales of around 474 million euros, showing a promising increase from the previous year.

One of the main challenges faced by the group was the lack of profitability of its online shops. As a result, these shops had to be closed. Additionally, following a ruling by the Constitutional Court regarding opening times, changes in schedules and operations are now being implemented at the 17 locations in UNIBox.

Another challenge for the group was finding employees to operate their Unimarkt branches. In response to this issue, they have decided to convert all Unimarkt branches into franchises by 2024/25. Currently, 65 out of 124 locations are already being managed by franchise partners.

Although the concept of autonomous UNIBoxes did not prove to be successful and resulted in their closure due to lack of profitability, the know-how gained from this venture will be utilized in Nah&Frisch hybrid markets within the group. The group currently has a total of 23 Nah&Frisch hybrid locations at the end of the financial year and has an expansion plan for 16 more locations in place for the upcoming year.

In addition to its core business operations, Unimarkt also operates two hybrid locations and sees this concept as the future of its operations amidst challenges in finding employees. The group consists of UNIWholesale, UNILogistik, Unimarkt Handels GmbH, and 50% ownership of convenience supplier unik, which achieved sales of 87 million euros in the previous financial year. With around 3,100 employees
